After she falls pregnant, she and the men in her three-way relationship embark on the hippy trail to Africa and then to India. Meanwhile, in a series of farcical adventures, Hamo (plant-geneticist and Alexandra's god-father) finds out how difficult it is to seduce Beautiful Youths as well as the devastating economic consequences of his new high-yield crop, "Magic" rice. Eventually, he and Alexandra meet by chance in Goa.... As If By Magic lost Wilson his middlebrow audience, and contributed to the decline of his once considerable reputation. The novel is fraught with parody and pastiche, queer and post-colonial sensibilities, and is prescient of the responsibilities of the West to the East.
